The International Research Centre for Intangible Cultural Heritage in the Asia-Pacific Region (IRCI) and the Agency for Cultural Affairs of Japan are jointly organizing the International Conference ‘Intangible Cultural Heritage and Climate Change in the Asia-Pacific Region’ from 8 to 9 October 2026.
Climate change poses significant challenges to intangible cultural heritage (ICH), affecting traditional knowledge, cultural practices, and ways of life. While international discussions on climate change and cultural heritage have expanded in recent years, the significance of ICH and local knowledge as a source of community resilience and adaptation remains insufficiently recognized. Building on recent research and initiatives across the Asia-Pacific region, this conference examines how climate change is reshaping ICH practices and their transmission. Bringing together experts and researchers from within and beyond the region, it explores approaches to strengthening ICH safeguarding in a changing environment, highlighting the potential of ICH to support community-led climate action.
We look forward to your participation!
